Quick Start Guide – BC052 iBeacon

The following guide is suitable for this beacon only (BC052):

99% of the problems that beginners have with beacons are just a simple misunderstanding of one of the concepts. Admittedly, the world of beacons is a bit confusing with all of the TX, interval, broadcast, UUID…technical words. Especially since most people don’t understand that BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) is actually something different than regular Bluetooth. In other words, don’t feel bad at all if you are a little confused at first. I tried to make it as clear as possible in the instructions below, but that requires lots of words, which sometimes can be a bit boring to read when you are excited about a new beacon you just received in the mail!

In the following section, we take you step by step through the process to change the minor ID as a learning exercise on the BC052 beacon. Changing other parameters such as the broadcast strength (TX) or interval or beacon name basically follow the same process.

OK, let’s try changing the Minor on your first beacon:

For the BC052, you will use an app called CheckBlue to change the Minor number on each of these beacons.

Download the CheckBlue app onto a smartphone:
Apple Version: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/checkblue/id1491877623
Android Version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.meeblue.checkblue&hl=en_US&gl=US

The password for the BC052 beacon is 000000 (six zeroes). You will only need to enter it once when prompted on the first beacon. Afterwards, the app will store this password and use it for each BC052 beacon automatically.

The default password in the app is meeble. Change this to 000000, then tap “See & Continue” on the screen:

If the app times out or gets stuck on “Sending Authentication Code”, just shut down the app and try again from the beginning.

With the app open on your phone screen, hold down the button on the beacon front side for 2 seconds (the button is under the plastic; just press the front side). The blue LED in the little hole on the beacon will flash quickly for two seconds to indicate that the beacon is now connectable for configuring. Place the beacon next to the phone.

On the first page of the app, you should now see the beacon appear (you may need to swipe your finger down the phone screen to refresh the page content).

If you have many bluetooth devices nearby, your screen may be filled with many different names. If so, place the current beacon close to your phone, then use the RSSI> filter slider on the top of the following screen to lower the target RSSI number (received signal strength of the things around you); this filters out weaker/farther away items, so that you see only the beacon that is very near to your phone:

Next, click the BlueCharm beacon on the app screen to connect to that beacon. You will then see this screen:

Next tap on “Configure Multiple Parameter” on the app screen. You will then see this screen:

Next tap on “1st Advertise Channel – iBeacon” on the app screen. You will then see this screen:

Next change the Minor number, 4949, to some other number. If this is your first beacon, you might change it to 1, for example. You will then see this screen:

Next tap on “Save” on the app screen’s upper right corner to save this new Minor number. You will then be taken back to the main Multi-Set screen:

Next tap on “Advertisement Mode” on the app screen. You will then see this screen:

Uncheck “Trigger by Button” (to remove the check mark next to it). Your app screen should now look like this:

Next select “Advertise 1st Channel Data” (to put a check mark next to it). The check mark next to “Advertise Both 1&2 Channel Data” will automatically disappear then. Your app screen should now look like this:

Next, tap the Left Arrow on the top left corner of the app screen. You will then see this screen:

Next, tap the Left Back Arrow on the top left corner of the app screen again. You will then see this screen:

Next, tap the Left Back Arrow on the top left corner of the app screen again. You will then see this screen:

Congratulations, you have changed the Minor on your first beacon. I’m sure it seemed a little complicated this first time, but with practice, it only takes about 15 seconds per beacon.

Your beacon is now ON and broadcasting its unique ID set:

UUID: 426C7565-4368-6172-6D42-6561636F6E73

Major: 3838

Minor: (the number that you set during the steps above)

If you want to change the minor on a beacon that you have already changed, just repeat the steps above. Be sure to hold down the beacon button for two seconds until you see the blue LED in the little hole on the beacon flash quickly for two seconds to indicate that the beacon is now connectable for configuring.

If you want to change one of the other parameters such as broadcast power (TX) or interval or beacon name, just follow the same steps as above but choose a different parameter on the Multi-Set page of the app.
